FEDERATION OF FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH, HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY
FACT SHEET
THE FEDERATION OF FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH:
THE FOF is the nation’s largest grassroots organization that focuses advocacy efforts on the well-being, mental health, behavior and emotional needs of families and youth. Since 1989, Federation of Families chapters have become the family’s voice on mental health needs for children. Local chapters promote Systems of Care philosophies that utilize integration and family choice, family participation in planning and providers partnering with youth and families to build, design and direct services and polices that affect their lives. In 2001, the former Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, MD., stated that as many as 1 out of 5 children may suffer from serious mental health needs.
PURPOSE:
The Federation of Families has established a sustainability fund entitled For Our Future™. This fund allows for the chapter to sustain programs that serve at risk youth with behavioral and mental health needs and families in Hillsborough County. In Hillsborough County, the seventh largest school district in the country, there are 20,000 children in need of advocacy support.
GOAL:
To raise approximately $100,000.00 over the next four (4) years to enable the chapter to find space, start new initiatives, and sustain those programs that work with at risk families.
EVENT:
Our May event which is entitled “Meals for Wellness,” will address the link between nutrition, behavior, mental health and overall wellness. It will be held Friday, May 28, 2010 at the University Area Community Center from 7:00 pm until 9: 30 pm.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Community leaders, politicians, corporate leaders, educators, executives, and concerned citizens from all areas who care about children and youth with behavioral health support needs.
